Combat arrows

Good evening gentle populace I have recently come across an Australian store selling Port Orford Cedar arrow shafts, one of the approved woods for combat archers, for $5.50 each. After assessing shipping costs I am happy to do a large bulk order for members of the Barony who wish to get into combat archery or need to replenish their supply. Reminder: Seeking Applicants for Fencing Marshal of Krae Glas

This is a reminder that applications for the position of Fencing Marshal of Krae Glas are due by 17 October 2025. To the Barony of Krae Glas, her College and all those to whom this missive may come, greetings! For some time, our Barony has not had a Fencing Marshal. However, we are still keen on seeing fencing grow and flourish in Krae Glas. To that end, if you share that vision, please read the below information and consider applying to be our new Fencing Marshal. To be eligible, you must be a current SCA member who is 18 years or older and have reliable and responsive access to email and internet. In an effort to encourage applicants for this role, I (Rúna) thought that I would outline expectations to provide clarity and transparency on what the role requires: Key elements of the job: * The baseline expectation is to ensure fencing activities in Krae Glas are compliant with the current rules, which may include investigating any reported incidents; attend Council meetings, report monthly to Council and quarterly to your Seneschal and Kingdom, and finally uphold privacy and the SCA Code of Conduct * A good officer would be a marshal or train to be one during their tenure, encourage new authorisations and inexperienced fighters, keep track of loaner gear, and ensure the relevant tests have been done according to schedule * An excellent officer would come up with ideas to recruit and retain fencers, help coordinate training or pathways for newer fencers to come into the sport, promote the Guild of Defence as desired as an option, and liaise with the College to strengthen fencing across both groups Please note that offering training and being a marshal are not required to take this position. If you get this role, this suggests you are willing and able to do the minimum baseline. While your Barony would appreciate as much of your energy as you are willing to give when you have capacity, you would also be very able to do the minimum on some months and be more hands on when you can. Just be clear and communicate with us. You don't have to do everything yourself - know that you will be well supported by myself as Seneschal and a member of the rapier marshallate, our existing fencing community, our B&B and the Kingdom Rapier Marshal. The undead approaches. We must beware and be ever vigilant, as we know they come near Samhain! Dress in your spookiest garb, or a period rendition of a creature of the night. Arts and Sciences competition theme is any concepts of death, afterlife, and/or undeath, any and all cultures welcome, any and all mediums welcome, be creative (documentation is nice if possible). Potluck picnic lunch is a Spookchuterie and I encourage all populace to bring their favourite spooky dishes and drinks to share. If you don’t have time to painstakingly craft your potions, concoctions, salume, or gustatory, to ward off the army of darkness, store bought is fine. The tournaments are to be a Zombie tournament filled with fighting, silliness and maybe extra limbs. The tournament in the first round, the fighters will be paired up like usual; A and B fight, and, say, B loses. He becomes a zombie, and is now A’s minion. In the next round A and B will fight C and D. The winning team captain now has three zombie minions, and they go on to face other teams of four in the next round. This continues until there is an overall winner. The basic rules: 1. Humans fight as normal. Zombies can be wounded/dismembered by blows to the arm or leg, but can only be killed by a blow to the head. 2. Zombies are not the brightest creatures–they tend to follow orders from their Zombie Master explicitly, but mindlessly. 3. These are “slow” zombies–they shamble and lurch around, not move at full combat speed. 4. Zombies are typically armed with some kind of blunt instrument: single sword or mace on the field. (maybe boffer or random foam limbs) 5. Double kills will be refought until there is a clear winner–we don’t want rogue zombies terrorizing the neighbourhood. Presuming we have enough boffers (soft, non-rigid items), the armoured and rapier tourneys will culminate in a grand, boffer-only melee for all the fighters. (If you’ve got boffer weapons, bring them out.) Populace will have a boffer tourney at the end to help kill all the zombies, if people are willing.
